Driveway Paving, Repair, and Replacement in Colorado Springs
Whether your driveway needs a full replacement, targeted repairs, or you are starting from scratch on a new property, E&K Paving handles every phase of the job. We are a locally owned, owner-operated company that has been working in Colorado Springs and El Paso County for over 20 years. Every project gets the same attention regardless of size, and Eddie is on every job from start to finish.
Colorado Springs homeowners deal with a combination of stresses that make driveway performance here a different challenge than in most other cities. Intense UV radiation at 6,000-plus feet of elevation breaks down the asphalt binder faster than in lower-elevation climates. Freeze-thaw cycles happen dozens of times each winter rather than once, which means moisture in small cracks has far more opportunities to expand and widen those cracks before spring. And the daily temperature swings that Colorado Springs is known for put constant thermal stress on pavement throughout the shoulder seasons.
We build and repair driveways with those specific conditions in mind, which is what separates a driveway that holds up for 20 years from one that starts showing serious problems after five.

New Driveway Installation
The sub-grade work matters more than most homeowners realize. Colorado Springs has soil conditions that vary significantly across the city, from clay-heavy soils in some areas that shift with moisture changes to rockier sub-grades in others. We assess what is underneath before we build on top of it, because a driveway is only as solid as the foundation supporting it.
We also grade for drainage on every installation. A driveway that does not shed water properly will deteriorate faster regardless of how good the asphalt itself is. Getting the slope right from the start is a core part of how we install every driveway.
Driveway Replacement
Full replacement gives us the opportunity to correct any problems that existed in the original installation, whether that is a base that was not properly built, grading that caused water to sit rather than drain, or edge conditions that contributed to deterioration. We remove the old asphalt, address what is underneath, and install a new surface built for how Colorado Springs weather actually behaves.
Driveway Resurfacing and Overlay
Resurfacing works well when damage is primarily cosmetic or limited to the upper layer, cracking has not reached the base, drainage is functioning correctly, and the driveway grade and height at transitions are still appropriate. We evaluate every driveway honestly before recommending this approach, because an overlay placed over a compromised base tends to fail faster than starting fresh. If resurfacing is not going to hold up, we will tell you before we do the work.
Driveway Repair and Patching
Not every driveway problem requires a full replacement or even a full resurfacing. Targeted repair is often the right answer when damage is localized and the rest of the driveway is holding up well. We handle crack filling and sealing, pothole patching using proper full-depth repair methods, edge repair and stabilization, and surface patching for worn or deteriorated areas.
The key to driveway repair that actually lasts is addressing the cause, not just the symptom. A pothole that gets patched without correcting the drainage problem or base failure underneath is going to open up again. We assess what caused the damage before we repair it so the fix holds.
For a deeper look at what determines whether repair or replacement is the right call, our blog post on driveway repair vs. replacement covers the main decision points.
Gravel to Asphalt Conversion
Whether the existing gravel can serve as a base for the new asphalt depends on how it is compacted and what the drainage situation looks like. We assess the existing surface before making a recommendation, and in most cases can use the gravel sub-base to reduce the overall cost of the conversion.
What Goes Into a Properly Installed Colorado Springs Driveway
The base layer is where most of the long-term durability comes from. A properly compacted aggregate base, sized appropriately for the expected loads and soil conditions at your property, is what supports the asphalt above it through years of freeze-thaw cycles and vehicle traffic. Asphalt laid directly on a soft or poorly compacted base will begin showing problems relatively quickly, regardless of how thick the asphalt itself is.
Drainage planning is part of the installation, not an afterthought. Every driveway we install is graded with the right slope to direct water off the surface and away from the home and the base material below. Standing water on asphalt, or water flowing toward a garage or foundation, is a sign that grading was not done correctly. We get this right from the start because correcting it after the fact is significantly more involved. The importance of drainage for asphalt driveways is something we write about in depth on our blog.
Asphalt depth matters for Colorado Springs conditions. The standard residential driveway in Colorado Springs should be installed at a minimum of 2 to 3 inches of compacted asphalt over a properly prepared base. Higher-load applications, such as driveways that regularly handle heavy trucks, RVs, or trailers, benefit from additional thickness. We spec each job based on what the driveway will actually be asked to do.
Edge finishing affects how long the driveway holds together over time. The edges of an asphalt driveway are structurally its most vulnerable points, and how they are finished and supported during installation affects how quickly edge crumbling develops. We take edge conditions seriously on every installation.
How We Work With Colorado Springs Homeowners
We start with an on-site evaluation. We come to your property, look at the existing driveway or site, assess the sub-grade, discuss drainage, and talk through what you are looking for. This is a free visit with no obligation.
From there you get a clear written estimate covering what we are going to do, what materials will be used, and what the project will cost. No vague line items, no prices that change after we have started.
We schedule around your needs and show up when we say we will. The crew handles everything from setup through cleanup, and Eddie is on the job throughout.
After the project is done, we walk you through what we did and what you should know about caring for the new surface going forward, including when to schedule sealcoating and what to watch for in the first few seasons.

Can Asphalt Be Installed Over Existing Asphalt?
One of the most common questions homeowners ask when a driveway starts showing its age is whether new asphalt can simply go on top of the old surface. The answer is sometimes, but it depends on the condition of what is already there and whether the situation is a good candidate for an overlay versus a full removal and replacement.
How to Prepare for a Residential Paving Project
Planning a new asphalt driveway is an exciting step, but a little preparation on the homeowner’s side can make a meaningful difference in how smoothly the project goes. From clearing the area to understanding what the crew will need, here is what Colorado homeowners in Colorado Springs and Monument should know before paving day arrives.
What Happens If You Never Sealcoat Your Driveway?
Sealcoating is easy to put off, especially when a driveway still looks fine. But asphalt that never gets sealcoated does not stay protected forever. Over time, skipping sealcoating leads to faster UV damage, earlier cracking, deeper stains, and a shorter overall lifespan. E&K Paving explains what really happens…
